About the study

Not every glacial lake is equally dangerous. This study evaluates glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) susceptibility in the Mahalangur Himalaya, the region around Mount Everest, by combining several criteria describing each lake and its surroundings into one assessment framework.

Contributions

  • A multi-criteria framework for assessing GLOF susceptibility
  • Its application to the glacial lakes of the Mahalangur Himalaya
  • A basis for deciding which lakes to monitor most closely
